What is "Run, Hide, Fight"?

In the event of a campus threat, “Run, Hide, Fight” represents key strategies for safety, not necessarily in that order. Depending on the situation, you may need to run, hide, fight, or use a combination of these actions to ensure your safety. Download the Poster.

Run: Get Away Fast

If you can leave safely, do it quickly. Look for the closest way out
Leave your belongings behind.
Keep your hands visible
Call 911 when it is safe to do so.

Hide: Stay Out of Sight

If you can't run, find a hiding spot.
Stay out of sight.
Stay quiet and silent your phone.
Lock, block and barricade doors if possible.

Fight: Protect Yourself

As a last resort, defend yourself.
Use whatever you have.
Be loud and fast.
Work together with others.
Call 911 when it is safe to do so.

We have Emergency Red Alert drills so you can practice. Mentally rehearse what you will do in an emergency.

Remember

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.  Visualize possible escape routes, including physically accessible routes for students and staff with disabilities and others with limited mobility.
  • If you see something strange or dangerous, tell someone right away.
  • Follow instructions from college officials and police during an emergency.
